CONTRIBUTE

Introduction

Proposals are invited from multidisciplinary teams*, comprised of (a) a 200-word summary of proposed chapter, (b) key search terms, (c) an indicative reference list, and (d) list of contributors, affiliations, and relevant expertise/contribution, using the protocol template, downloaded below. Chapters will follow PRISMA reporting guidance for systematic literature review (Zawacki-Richter et al., 2020).

The Editorial Board encourage multidisciplinary teams* with a range of expertise, including knowledge of design and technology education, systematic literature review, pedagogical practice, and/or policymaking, as relevant to one of the three main sections (II Curriculum, III Pedagogy, and IV Assessment).

Chapter titles will be phrased as a research question, and proposals can either (a) express an interest in one of the possible chapter titles on THE BOOK page or (b) propose a new title on other themes from literature. Proposals will be reviewed by the Editorial Board on the rigor and relevance of the chapter for design and technology education in international contexts in school classrooms, in line with the outline above. Submissions must be made by  1st July 2024 , with ‘DTE:ARTLS Chapter Proposal’ in the subject line; using the protocol template, downloadable from the red download button below - submissions must include the lead author's CV. All submissions must be in English.

To submit a chapter proposal using the template, click on the green mail button below to submit by email. The editors will notify sucessful proposers by 2nd September 2024, with feedback and an invitation to join the project team. Successful proposals will be judged on the (a) quality of the proposal (evidenced through the template), (b) relevance to the book proposal outline on this website, and (c) and the experience of the lead author (as indicated in their CV). We encourage submissions from all around the world, where the design-make-evaluate paradigm is part of the school curriculum.

Teams

* MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAMS should include members with experience of research and practice in the teaching of design and technology subjects (primary, secondary, and/or teacher education), and at least one member with a specialism in conducting systematic literature reviews. We encourge diversity in (and across) teams and the inclusion of practicing teachers, and submissions from any country and continent where design and technology education (in its various guises) are welcome. Teams are preferred, but the editors will consider chapter proposals from individuals.

Protocol

The Protocol

The protocol will be updated once the chapter is complete this document will be uploaded to a database of systematic review, rapid review, and umbrella review protocols for the book – such as PROSPERO.  Alongside the peer review process, this will ensure that the chapters can be classified as research under the Research Excellence Framework (REF), in the UK, and similar measures in other countries. Click on the button above to download the protocol template.

Principles

The Principles

The book will be organised into five parts (see overview below), with chapters in Parts II (curriculum), III (pedagogy) and IV (assessment) providing maximum 3000-word discussions (excluding references) based on a synthesis of findings from a systematic evidence review of a particular aspect of design and technology education. Chapters must be written in an accessible manner and not assume that the reader is familiar with research. Sources of evidence should be open access, where possible, and drawing on design and technology education related research and scholarship from around the world, where available. Chapters should be written with an international audience in mind, where possible and appropriate.

Contributors should work in small teams, including a range of subject and research expertise, and will be required to:

  1. produce and upload their search protocol in the agreed format prior to publication (with updates as necessary);

  2. produce their 3000-word chapter in the agreed format on the agreed schedule;

  3. peer review at least two chapters (two cycles, double blind);

  4. record a 3-minute video summary of their chapter prior to publication.

Format

The Format

The chapters will follow the house format for the publisher, and contributors will be required to use the template (to be provided on acceptance of chapter proposal) and embedded styles. There will be a maximum of one (1) figure (diagram/image) allowance per chapter. Chapters must include a:

  • title written as a research question;

  • outline of the key principles and concepts in the chapter (approx. 200 words)

  • synthesis of key findings and implications from the literature, with written illustrations/examples of how it works in practice (approx. 2500 words);

  • synopses of a key study, focusing on classroom application (approx. 200 words);

  • list of the key action points for classroom practice (approx. 100 words);

  • reference list of all the sources used in the systematic literature review;

Authors will also write a 250-word abstract and record a 3-minute video abstract, which will be used for online information and promotion of the book, but not included in the book itself.
